Dr. William E. Pannell

Dr. Steven A. Peay

   
Dr. William E Pannell received his BA from Fort Wayne Bible College in 1951. In 1980 he earned a M.A. in Social Ethics from the University of Southern California. He has received two honorary doctorates from Malone and Geneva Colleges.

After graduating from Fort Wayne, he became an evangelist, preaching and teaching throughout the U.S. From 1955-1965 he served as an Associate Pastor in Detroit, as well as Youth Director for the Brethren Assembly Youth. From 1964-1968 he was named Assistant Director of Leadership Training with Youth for Christ.

From 1971-1974 he was the first African-American to serve on the Board of Trustees of Fuller Seminary. In 1974 he joined the faculty of Fuller as Assistant Professor of Evangelism and Director of the African Studies Program. In 1992 he was appointed to his present position as the Arthur DeKruyter/Christ Church Oak Brook Professor of Preaching. He also served as Dean of the Chapel from 1992-1998.

Dr. Pannell has been an active participant in conferences on evangelism around the world, and is in much demand as a guest lecturer at colleges and universities throughout the country. He serves on the board of Taylor University and Sojouners/Call to Renewal.

Dr. Pannell’s books, which will be available at the Annual Meeting’s bookstore, include My Friend, the Enemy; Evangelism from the Bottom Up; The Coming Race Wars?; and A Cry for Reconciliation.

He lives in Altadena with his wife Hazel and two sons, Philip and Peter.
 
Dr. Steven A. Peay has served as Senior Minister of the First Congregational Church of Wauwatosa since 2002. He served as Assistant Professor in Homiletics and Historical Theology at Saint Vincent Seminary/School of Theology in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He also served as the seminary’s Academic Dean from 1989 to 1994.

A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, He received his B.A. degree from Greenville College, his M. Div. degree from Saint Vincent Seminary, his M.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and his Ph D from Saint Louis University. He has published articles on preaching, church history, and spirituality in a variety of journals. Dr. Peay organized the first Congregational Symposium, which was held at First Congregational Church, Wauwatosa in 1998.

Dr. Peay is active in our Congregational fellowship on a variety of levels. He served on the Board for the Founders’ Library, the Board of Directors for the Congregational Foundation for Theological Studies (serving as its chair), and the Nominating Committee of the Association. He is a founding member of the Institute for Congregational Studies and is its President. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors of the American Congregational Association. He teaches at our Association’s Boston Seminar. Internationally, he is a founding member of the Theological Commission of the International Congregational Fellowship. He has served as the Moderator of the Wisconsin Congregational Association and as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Wisconsin Congregational Ministerial Association. He was one of the founding members of the Wisconsin Congregational Theological Society, and serves as its ‘convener.’

He is presently working on a new book on the history of Congregationalism. His passion for and articulation of the Congregational Way of life has been exemplary. Married in 1996 to Julie, whom he met at FCC Wauwatosa, they have two adult sons.
