Churches : Intentional Transitional Ministers

Intentional Transitional Ministry (often called interim ministry) is a particular kind of ministry for churches who are between settled pastors.  During the transitional time, as churches adjust to the loss of one minister and prepare for the calling of the next, unique leadership needs emerge.  There is opportunity for evaluating a church’s future ministries and directions.  This time is also filled with potential for spiritual renewal, hope and, when necessary, healing.  An Intentional Transitional Minister can help prepare the church for new directions, vision and leadership.

Intentional Transitional Ministers have specialized training to help churches during this time.

The reasons for calling a transitional minister are varied.  Some reasons include:

  • A beloved pastor of long service retiring or moving to another position
  • A minister resigning, voluntarily or not, under troubled circumstances .
  • A church considering major changes of vision, ministry or focus
  • A church experiencing conflict

Whatever the situation, it is a wise and caring congregation that recognizes the unique needs and opportunities present in the interim period and secures the leadership skills of a minister with special training in transitions.  Your decision to call an Intentional Transitional Minister means your church can be well prepared for the work God has called you to do and for the finding of a new, settled minister.

A fully trained Intentional Transitional Minister will come to you with clear goals and objectives to help you discern your next steps appropriate for your situation.  He or she will work with your church leadership and work for the cohesiveness of the congregation.  The Intentional Transitional Minister is never to be considered as a candidate as your settled pastor, nor will that pastor interfere with your search to find that next minister God has prepared to serve you.

A current list of Certified Intentional Transitional Ministers and Clergy with Training and/or Equivalent Experience is available through the NACCC office.
