AMERICAN
BIBLE SOCIETY
New York, New York
www.americanbible.org
The American Bible Society was founded in 1816 by a group of
Christians sharing a common concern that the Holy Scriptures be
distributed to people in need. Today, the American Bible Society
continues to respond to expressed needs for the Scriptures, both in
the United States and around the world. Each year, in partnership with
the United Bible Societies, ABS distributes more than 500 million
copies of the Scriptures in at least 200 countries. This partnership
of the Bible societies has assisted in translating at least one book
of the Bible into more than 2,000 languages around the globe.
Technological advances are also being used to enhance the ABS
mission. Video and audiocassettes are now available, as well as
Scriptures for the visually and hearing impaired. Portions of the
Bible are now available on CD-ROM for study and reference, and a daily
Scripture reading is part of the ABS website (www.americanbible.org).
Special versions of the Bible are also mass produced for children,
churches, correctional institutions, and a myriad of other audiences.
The American Bible Society, in 1995, completed publication of a new
translation of the Bible known as the Contemporary English Version (CEV).
This new translation has been heralded by many as a breakthrough in
providing the Bible in clear, simple English. Translated directly from
the original languages, the CEV faithfully communicated the meaning of
the biblical text in a lucid yet lyrical style.
As it has throughout its long and distinguished history, the
American Bible Society continues to be quick to respond where the Word
of God could provide spiritual comfort, hope, and guidance. However,
no one can predict what the future holds, here in this country and
elsewhere. With the opening of many new mission fields, the need is
tremendous. The demand for Bibles continues to far exceed current
supply. ABS is doing an excellent job of closing the gap between
supply and demand.
