MORGAN SCOTT PROJECT
Deer Lodge, Tennessee
The Morgan Scott Project for Cooperative Christian Concerns was established in 1972 to minister to the impoverished residents of the Morgan and Scott counties in eastern Tennessee. Twenty-nine percent of families in this area fall below the poverty line.
The Emergency Aid Program runs all year long. Mission clients seek assistance with emergency needs such as food, financial help with utility bills, medication, hearing aids, eye glasses, etc. This program is the most utilized service of the Morgan Scott Project. The project director has asked that NACC Churches hold “Soap Sundays” to collect soap, shampoo, and other hygiene products. Items such as these supplement what people cannot purchase with food stamps. The Thrift and Bread Program collects clothing for distribution or resale and collects bread once a week for the poor. The Good Earth Program supplies potatoes, fertilizer, and seeds to area families for gardening. Temporary aid is provided, through the Emergency Aid Program, to families who lose their home to a fire or natural disaster. Emergency medical care is also promptly provided as needed. The Christmas Gift Program acquires gifts for children (infants to age 18) whose parents meet the mission’s guidelines. An average of 1,800 children are served – each receiving one large toy, one small toy, a book, and article of clothing, socks, and underwear. Cool School Tools assists families with back packs and school necessities for students at the start of the school year. The Housing Rehabilitation Program assists families with home repairs they cannot afford to make. Many houses in this region do not have an indoor bath, running water, or even electricity. The Housing Rehabilitation Program equips some homes with these basic services or repairs windows, porches, roofs, or doors.
The focus of the Morgan Scott Project is not simply to give handouts, but to help area residents establish a better life for themselves. Volunteers are always welcome at the Morgan Scott Project. Area residents can see the love and compassion of Christ in action through this mission.
