Dear Friends,
Of the dozens of newsletters we receive and review monthly, most have a pastoral message
in them. When
you receive this, the Lenten period will be nearing an end. But Rev. Rick Koch (FCC, Anchorage) had a Lenten
message in his newsletter; a piece of which I want to pass on. It has multiple meanings.
Levi Yitzhok asked a man, who seemed to be in a great hurry, why
he rushed so. "I am in pursuit of my livelihood,"
he replied. "And how do you know that your livelihood runs ahead of you?
Maybe it is behind you and what you need is to pause till it overtakes
you," the rabbi said.
I think of that story as I think of you in your leadership roles in congregations across
the country. Sometimes, just sometimes, we need to be possessed of the Spirit of God, rather
than seeking to possess it, as if it is a commodity, a thing that once in our hands and heads
never leaves us. Is this why we are so often stuck? We think we already have the essence of the Gospel message,
that we've already done the work?
I've heard about and know a few of you who are master preachers at what Fred Craddock calls "overhearing
the Gospel," but wonder if there's also room to be overtaken by it? Thank you, Rick, for reminding me.

We commend to you a simple way that many of our Churches are
celebrating the Congregational Way _ both in state and national
relationships. Include in your Church's letterhead, outside signs, indoor
bulletin board, edge of town/city signs, and websites the fact that you
are proud members of associations of Churches. |
