Many towns, villages or counties have
established guidelines or ordinances to control improvements and
additions to "historic" buildings within certain districts.
Many of our older churches could well find themselves covered by
these restrictions. It might be frustrating when
you consider a remodeling or construction project to discover that your church
is considered "an historic building." Don't be discouraged. It is
your property and you should have the right to improve or expand it for its
intended function, especially if your building and operational use preceded the
passage of the restrictive guidelines/ordinances. Be positive
in your planning presentation to those who must approve. Explain, with
visuals, how your improvements will not detract from the original structure by
using similar architectural style and materials. It might cost a bit more
to duplicate materials, but the "historic look" and basic integrity of the
building can be preserved. You could even use an original outside wall and
its covering to be an inside wall. This too reminds the church of its
heritage without hampering the need for new space. It can be accomplished.

listed the members who have financially sponsored the newsletter. Great
idea! (FCC, Elkader, IA) in the front of this month's excellent newsletter
