FROM MY HEART TO YOURS….

Dear Friends,

As of this writing our partner in Christ, former Executive Secretary of the National Association, former minister of Sun City Congregational Church (and several other NA Churches), John Alexander, has died.

To his last breath he was a champion of practicing his Christian faith in Congregational ways. His quiet demeanor, his unshakable faith, his loving nature, his strength of character, his supportive attitude, have impressed me for years. I first met him at the dining room table of the parsonage in Calais, ME, where my father served as a minister. Dad considered him one of the humblest and yet strongest voices of Congregational Christianity of that day.

He remained such to the end of his life. Whenever I visited him, or we would talk on the phone, he always had a prayer for me and offered whatever help he could. After the Annual Meeting in Providence, he called and asked if I would mind if he wrote a piece in the yearbook for the 50h anniversary of the Association. I was honored. In it he wrote: “There are few WORDS that need to be added to what has been proclaimed through the four centuries to define Congregationalism…But there still remain many DEEDS that need to be performed…Faith in God…Individual freedom…Voluntary fellowship that binds human beings in loving and respectful living….”

He, along with several others who live eternally, and a few (thank God), who are still with us, are spiritual mentors of mine and many others in our Way. Reluctantly, but ever so gratefully, we give him back to God whose humble and yet great child and adult he was all his life.

Grace and Peace,
Dr. Thomas M. Richard, Executive Secretary
