THE LARGER CHURCH AND THE NACCC

ASK NOT WHAT THE NACCC CAN DO FOR YOU BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THE NACCC

Have you ever bought one of those tools that can do “everything?” It’s a
hammer, a wrench, a screwdriver, etc. In my experience one finds out that the tool actually doesn’t do anything as well as a single tool created for a purpose.

As Moderator, I have emphasized the smaller Churches which comprise the majority of the NACCC. This is because I have great belief in their power and potential.

Last year I attended Executive Committee presentation. The question was asked, “What can the NACCC do for the larger Church?” I have heard others from some of our bigger Churches ask what the NA does for them. In most cases our larger Churches have the resources to deal with most of their needs.

Back to my multi-task tool. As a small association it is difficult to provide everything our Churches need. Some things are better provided by other sources. A good example is Sunday School curriculum. There are some excellent publishing houses. This allows us to concentrate on missions, youth, pastoral search, etc.

Should the conclusion be that the larger Churches don’t need the NACCC and should just go their own way? NO! I ask the larger churches to look at GIVING, NOT GETTING. Many of our larger Churches are really good at some things (in some cases that’s how they became larger.) Perhaps connecting with young adults, fundraising, blended worship, etc. The larger Church can be like the single tool really good at something. My challenge is for these Churches, not to look inward, but look to a sister Church and see what you can share, not in a paternalistic way, but as an outgrowth of the fellowship of which we are so proud.

One event in KC will be “What Works in Your Church.” This will be a POSITIVE sharing of ideas that are working. Come and share your “tools” and together, large and small we, can use our tools to build God’s Kingdom here on earth.

Hannah Hall, Moderator
