2005 YOUTH LEADERS’ RETREAT

For the past two years, the Youth Leaders’ Retreat (YLR) has been held at the Wonderland Camp in Camp Lake, Wisconsin. Wonderland Camp, which is owned and operated by the Salvation Army, is situated between O’Hare Field in Chicago or Mitchell Field in Milwaukee, WI, and an easy commute from either. The camp is west of Kenosha, WI, by about 10-12 miles.

The YLR is a yearly event that is not only spiritually motivated but is also designed to give materials and presentations that will help youth leaders in their pursuit of attracting and holding youth in their church groups. The Commission on Youth Ministries has put a priority on offering youth leaders a place to turn to for resources.
The YLR was fortunate for the last two years to have Lynn Merkel and Joanne Simpson as co-directors of the event. It was a wonderful effort by both of them and the event ran smoothly both years. The agenda was well thought out to provide as many ideas and helps to the youth leaders as possible while still maintaining the time for quiet and introspection for which retreats are known. Well, there was time for games, too, led by a clown. Jenny Rouble has been the fun MC for the last two years. The games were not only fun but gave examples for teamwork, thinking outside the box, etc. to bring back home to involve the youth in the local church.

The attendees were split down the middle with 15 first-timers and 15 that have been to YLR in previous years. There were 20 churches from as far away as Massachusetts and California represented plus one staff member of the NACCC office.

The Commission on Youth Ministries would welcome comments or suggestions for increasing participation in the Youth Leaders’ Retreat. They feel the event is time and money well spent to help churches with their youth programs. Please let us know what can be done to make the event more accessible and desirable for your church to send your youth leaders. Please contact Karen Frazzell, Director of Youth Ministries, at the NACCC Office. You can either call Karen at 1-800-262-1620, Ext. 16 or e-mail kfrazzell@naccc.org.

HELP THE NA OFFICE HELP YOU!

Email us at: naccc@naccc.org with your suggestions.

The NA office receives many checks from churches each week. Because of this, please note in the memo section the fund to which the check is to be credited. We want your gift to support the cause your church is interested in.

We maintain a church information database, which includes minister’s name, moderator’s name, email contact, etc. These details help us to send pertinent information to the appropriate person. Please send any changes to naccc@naccc.org.

WHY DO CHURCH PEOPLE FIGHT?

One answer is, because there has always been religious conflict, according to Harry R. Butman, DD, Pastor Emeritus of Cong’l Church of the Messiah, and a Founder of the NACCC. Dr. Butman quotes biblical texts which suggest conflict is a fact of life in churches, as well as his pastoral approach to conflict within the many churches he has served in over 70 years of ministry. And yet, he concludes, “Ministry is fun.”
