FROM MY HEART TO YOURS….

by (Rev. Dr.) Thomas M. Richard, Executive Secretary

In a recent visit to F.C.C. in Evanston, IL, I shared with an adult forum my adaptation and enlargement of challenges for the 21st century Church(es) issued by Loren Mead in one of his more recent books. For me, the role of the NA is not only to lift these up to our congregations, but also partner with them to seek ways to meet them.

(1)Transfer the ownership of the Church. Clericalism is over. Let's give it a proper funeral and get on with pastor/teacher/leader/mission/ministry models.

(2) Find new structures to carry our faith. What is your congregation's role in the community? How are you perceived? What can you do to encourage the perception or change it?

(3) Discover a passionate spirituality. Our culture is "into" a spirituality which is not terribly deep. How do we advocate a deeper Christian spirituality in light of this cultural phenomenon?

(4) Feed the world's hunger for community. People are begging for a sense of community in a world which has become, in many ways a village, and yet, more distant than ever from each other.

(5) Become an apostolic people. Do we really have a sense that we are sending people out and being sent by God to make an appeal on the Almighty's behalf to the world?

(6) Change our definition of mission work. Redefine missions from a largely-benefactor based program, to a more inclusive mission to participate in, sympathize with, and empower those who need us and whom we need.

God bless you in the challenges your Church meets every day.

Grace and Peace

WE'VE LOST A FRIEND
It is providential that our historian, Dr. Lloyd Hall, quoted Norm Ream in the last edition of the NA NEWS. Just days ago he passed away [mid-January]. Norm was a longtime minister of Wauwatosa Church but also a great advocate of the Congregational Way. For some years he was editor of The Congregationalist magazine. Look for more on Rev. Ream in the next issue of The Congregationalist.

PROTECT YOUR CHURCH
Recent abuse allegations and cases make it mandatory that local Churches properly protect the members of their congregations and the Church itself. For more information, call the NA office.
