NICKERSON CONGREGATIONAL HERITAGE SCHOLARSHIP Established in 1994, the Nickerson Congregational Heritage Scholarship Fund was created by a gift from the estate of Lucille Nickerson. In 2000, the scholarship received additional funding from the estate of William Nickerson.

Congregational Heritage Scholars may be awarded financial assistance for tuition at Piedmont College according to the criteria listed below. All students receiving this scholarship must be 25 years of age or less and must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 or an SAT of 1100. Students who are members of a member church of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches or United Church of Christ are eligible to receive an award for 33.3 percent of tuition. A letter signed by the minister and an officer of the student's local church stating that he or she is a member in good standing must be submitted.

All Congregational Heritage Scholarships are renewable up to four years. Recipients are required to maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA and meet all standards as set forth by the Student Handbook. In addition, recipients may apply for other need and merit-based financial aid.

GREAT IDEAS!
FCC, Anchorage, AK, has a huge auction, preceded by a catered dinner at a Native American Cultural Center. "An Evening of Elegance," black tie and evening dress optional.

FCC, Ashland, NE, has a time and talent commitment form in their newsletter, asking people to identify their interests and gifts to be used in the coming year. We assume they offer this possibility annually, giving people an opportunity to share their gifts in a number of areas over the years.

FCC, Spencer, IA, put the names and addresses of their college-age young adults in their newsletter, asking members to write to them, send cards, care packages, etc.

Christ Community, Anchorage, AK, has a tradition of what they call their "mission candle," the lighting of which takes place during an intervention minute of their worship service. Besides their communion table candles, they place a large candle on the table, inviting someone each week to light it just before worship begins, while sharing a problem or concern that they have. What began as a way for chemically dependent members to share their stories, expanded to all members sharing their concerns with a non-judgmental and loving group. A prayer follows and then their opening hymn.
