| FROM MY HEART TO YOURS
|

Dr. Thomas M. Richard
Executive Secretary |

Dear Friends,
It was an honor to be part of the recent theological symposium in Los Angeles. But beyond any personal honor,
I was proud of the caliber and thoughtfulness of the
papers delivered by presenters from within our fellowship.
I hope we can encourage other clergy (and laity) to participate. These symposiums give me hope that the
commitment to a learned clergy has possibilities once again.
If we are to make an appeal on behalf of God in an information age glutted with data,
diversions, and countless options, we had better be prepared to do our homework! And what
does that include?
Certainly not just better sermons. The increased mobility of members makes it imperative
that we make personal connections with leadership and our congregations in exemplary
fashion. We need to take adult education, and the opportunities it presents for
local theological discussions about our faith, more seriously. The equipping and empowering of the leadership of our congregations,
in worship, and in small formal and informal groups is a must.
It is the quality of the work of the clergy among us that will take us to a higher level of discipleship. Symposiums
are but a small, first-step. Of far greater impact, would be a fired-up clergy, supported by an empowered laity. Why,
we could see the teaching/learning/educational models of Christianity take a giant leap forward!
