FROM MY HEART TO YOURS….

by Dr. Thomas M. Richard, Executive Secretary

Dear Congregational Leaders,

At the recent Executive Committee meeting in Gurnee, IL, I heard two devotional messages and a sermon which reminded me what we are about as Christians.

The first devotional leader was Rev. Ed White of Sun City, AZ. His text was Psalm 133, the first verse. He described an amazing Christmas-time story when he was a chaplain in Vietnam. The message to the EC? Isn't it wonderful to come to this meeting, knowing we are unified in Christ.

The second devotional leader was Rev. Joe Clarke who used Colossians 2 as his text. He told the story of his recent experience of watching sheep from an air balloon. Though they were frightened by the noises about them, they never looked up to see that their fears were unfounded. He made the analogy that we are often the same, we react to things in life like sheep.

The sermon several of us from the leadership team heard Sunday morning was from the Gospel where John and James ask for a place of privilege to sit at the Jesus' sides in eternity. Dr. Bill Genda shared how the Church needs to learn and relearn that we are the world's greatest "service industry." Our requisite business, if you will, is in serving Christ by serving others.

I so appreciated all three of these messages - the blessing of being unified in Christ, the need to have a "center" upon which we concentrate our efforts (especially when we are afraid or fearful of our direction), and a reminder of our role as servants. Appropriate messages not only for our leadership, but for our churches.

Grace and Peace

HEALTH COSTS

Sumner Grant, Executive Director of MMBB, recently wrote to all MMBB members regarding the double digit premium increases of the MMBB-endorsed medical plans. He wants us to know that MMBB is fighting the cost containment battle and making changes to provide members with access to the best possible health insurance for the dollar. MMBB will continue to explore ways to help control both future premiums and out of pocket costs.
