FROM MY HEART TO YOURS….

by Dr. Thomas M. Richard, Executive Secretary

Dear Friends,
Nadine Gordimer, a South African author, defines progress as, “the continuing efforts of men and women to narrow the gap between the convenience of the powers that be and the unwritten charter.” There is a similar sentiment in the 11th chapter of the letter to the Hebrews: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

After every leadership meeting of which I am a part, I review the agenda, trying to discern which decisions were made for convenience’s sake and which ones were representative of stepping out into the unknown future. It’s all about location and direction, isn’t it?

When thinking about progress and direction, a traffic rotary is a useful metaphor. It symbolizes the choices that confront us. One enters a new rotary from a starting place of relative unawareness. But no rotary is a final destination. It is simply an intersection, and forces us to keep moving and make a decision. There are multiple ways for us to go. Which will we choose?

For those of us in the Congregational Christian way there are many possibilities, many choices, but one hub around which we move – our faith in Christ Jesus -- which emboldens and equips our churches for the journey into the not-yet-known.

I’m proud to say the NA’s leadership team is living more and more in hope, and their decisions reflect this.

Grace and peace.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FUNDS A FINANCIAL CONFERENCE

Representatives from our Divisions and the Financial Services Committee will be meeting in February in Milwaukee, to strategize about how best to appeal to our member churches for their prayer and financial support, thanks to a grant from the Executive Committee. “This could be one of the most important meetings we’ve had in decades, and one which shows our churches that we take their concerns and requests seriously,” our Executive Secretary said to the EC when the vote to fund the conference was taken.
