THE BOSTON SEMINAR INFORMS
THOSE NEW TO CONGREGATIONAL WAY
|
The Boston Seminar is
conducted at the Congregational Library on Beacon St. in Boston
and at the Walker Center in Newton, MA. We meet during the
second half of August each year. It is an intensive week of
lecture and discussion each morning and evening on the history
of the Congregational Way. CFTS students are required to attend
once during their seminary years. The Division for Ministry (DFM)
has been recommending that churches who call a non-NA pastor
make attending the Boston Seminar part of the call agreement.
Additionally, some NA clergy use the seminar as a “refresher
course” on Congregational history and polity. The 2004 Boston
Seminar was attended by twelve men and women of whom four are
new clergy to the NA and two are from churches considering
membership in the NA.
The Rev. Eric Nordgren now serves the Duluth Congregational
Church, Duluth MN. Eric was ordained and installed last winter
and is a graduate of United Theological Seminary of the Twin
Cities.
The Rev. Megan Comeau serves the Westchester Congregational
Church, Colchester, CT. She is a graduate of Andover-Newton
Theological Seminary and grew up in the Community Church
tradition.
The Rev. Charles Birnie was ordained at Christ Evangelical
Congregational Church, Middleboro, MA, in September. Charles
comes from an engineering background and in 1994 was lead to
found a mission in Kenya. Light of Christ Ministries is based in
Nairobi, Kenya. Charles splits his time between evangelizing in
Kenya and fundraising for the mission in the US.
The Rev. J.R. McAliley III is a retired Navy Chaplain who is now
serving Center Congregational Church, Atlanta, GA. The church is
considering membership in the NA.
The Rev. Peter Barclay splits his time between being a Chaplain
for the Seafarer’s Friend and serving a small UCC church.
James Miller has been assisting the Rev. Chris Brian at Pilgrim
Congregational Church in Milwaukee, WI. James is considering
seminary while his church has begun steps to ordain him.
I encourage you to welcome our new colleagues in ministry.
Invite them to local gatherings, regional meetings, our Annual
Meeting, and the Minister’s Convocation. It is by such
invitation that our Fellowship of Churches will strengthen and
grow!
Rev. Dr. Donald P. Olsen
Harry R. Butman, speaking of the Pilgrims, said this in the November
1970 issue of “The Congregationalist”:
“A scanty band—sick, starved, death-halved—they huddled
together through the first winter under the immense and cruel
skies of America, and lived to bring to birth a myth of fact and
hope—a deep story of an ineluctable faith in God, and a big
dream of a freedom for man never to be yielded. They called
themselves the Lord’s free people. Let us cherish the name and
pray and work that we may be somewhat worthy of it in our time.”
Rev. Dr. Lloyd Hall is the Association’s
Historian
and serves Plymouth Congregational Church of Lansing, MI
