THE HEAVENS ARE TELLING THE GLORY OF GOD... |
|
by Rev. Beth Bingham
Pilgrim Congregational Church, Pomona, California
|
|
The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament
proclaims his handiwork.
Psalm 19:1 (NRSV)
The remarkable power of like minds coming together is a precious
quality of Congregationalism. Janet Garber, present Moderator of
the Cal West Association, shares such an opportunity:
In past years, all-day seminars preceded the Annual NACCC
Meeting, which those who attended found very interesting and
worthwhile. There was time for questions, discussion and
feedback. Thus, three people have decided to try to reinstate
them, beginning with the 2006 Meeting in Costa Mesa. We have
chosen a topic of interest to church-goers today: the conflict
of evolution vs. Creationism, which has been raging for 80
years.
The three persons are Bill and Janet Garber, both scientists and
members of the Congregational Church of the Messiah in Los
Angeles, and the Rev. Arlin Larson, pastor of the Congregational
Church in Searsport, Maine. Joining them is The Rev. Dr. Donald
Bentley, past NACCC Moderator and Associate Minister of Pilgrim
Congregational Church in Pomona, and a retired statistics
professor at Pomona College.
Making the seminar possible was the availability of Francisco
Ayala, professor of Biology, Genetics, Ecology and Philosophy at
the University of California at Irvine. His research has
included the evolution of the parasitic Protozoa which cause
malaria. Professor Ayala is known world wide for his teaching,
as well as for his efforts to reconcile science and religion. He
is also past president of Sigma Psi, the honorary science
fraternity.
The only cost to participants will be whatever extra lodging
expenses there might be, as well as a box lunch. Professor
Ayala’s costs are being covered by fellow Congregationalists who
are enthusiastic about reinstating the seminars. Those who live
in the area are welcome to attend the seminar. It is not
necessary to register for the Annual Meeting to attend.
Registration information will be forthcoming.
Editor’s Comment: “Whenever science makes a discovery, the
devil grabs it while the angels are debating the best way to use
it.”

LOOKING FORWARD TO CALIFORNIA
The Church Services Commission would like to create a listing of
authors from our member Churches for possible inclusion in the
resource room at our Annual Meeting in Costa Mesa. Are you, or
someone you know, an author? Email the Director of Church
Services with authors’ names and contact information.
