Please Share
Your Ideas

We'd be happy to share your suggestions and ideas for youth programs and activities. It would be especially helpful to know what churches with small youth groups are doing to make sure that their youth have a good experience with their youth groups. Suggestions and short articles are always welcome. Send them to dwilliams@heritagemadison .org or Diane Williams, PO Box 44561, Madison, WI 53744.

YOUTH, NAPF, HOPE

Tapping the Potential of the Next Generation

The Youth Subcommittee sponsored a seminar by Rev. Patti Dando Haaheim titled, "Tapping the Potential of the Next Generation: Asset Building and Faith Development for our Youth." The Asset Builders program, developed by the Search Institute, basically says that there are 40 concrete, positive experiences and qualities ~'developmental assets" that influence the lives of young people. The more of these assets that young people have, the greater opportunity they have for being successful in life. Some of these are supplied by family and school, but others are supplied by other organizations including CHURCHES. Suggestions will be listed in the coming issues.

Pilgrim and Thanksgiving Materials

Looking for materials on the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving for your Sunday School classes or church? The NA office has a bibliography of resources on our Pilgrim Heritage. Contact the office for a copy.

Be sure to check the web sites for Plimoth Plantation. The address is www.plimoth.org. There are a variety of resources available through this site including: 17t" Century Games, Plimoth Plantation Coloring Book, Thanksgiving Crafts, The Pilgrims at Plymouth by Lucille Recht Penner.

Concerned that so much of the popular literature portrays an inaccurate version of the life of the Pilgrims? The American Adventure is a series of books that are interesting to a wide range of readers. They start with the voyage of the Pilgrims and their first winter and continue through American history. The first book takes the Pilgrims from Holland to the landing in Plymouth. The second describes settling into life in the New World. It deals with the story in a factual way and lets children know that it was a challenging life. The books are available by mail from Christian Book Distributors, P.O. Box 7000, Peabody MA 019617000 or on their website: Christianbook.com. (These people have some great sales for youth materials!) I have also found them in Family Bookstores and some of the independent Christian Bookstores in our area.
