MISSIONS AND MISSIONARIES
by Ruth Mahnke, NACCC Office

NEWS FROM CMFE
The Christian Mission in the Far East has been affected by ongoing conflicts between Philippine government troops and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (a Muslim extremist group). Rev. Jaime Julian, mission director, reports that the Edenton Mission College has served as one of the evacuation centers for those who were affected by the on-going conflict in neighboring places (Mindanao). Many families sought shelter at the school. The mission assisted with medical care, food, and pastoral care. Mission personnel were grateful for the opportunity to serve these poor and needy people. The government has been forced to move the evacuation center due the start of the fall term at the school that serves 1,300 students from the elementary grades through college.

UPDATE FROM ARGENTINA
The Asociacion Civil Cristiana Congregational located in Argentina oversees "God's Garden Project." This community garden is a place where mission clients are taught to grow fruits and vegetables. Teaching self-sufficiency is the goal of the Garden Project. This past year harvests included corn, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, beans, onions, melons, and a variety of fruit. The Argentine Mission requests support for God's Garden Project. The Mission must rebuild a portion of the groundskeeper's home. The project needs a used tractor and a plow to prepare the soil for planting and fruitful harvests. Funds designated for a grinding machine used to prepare feed for dairy cattle would be greatly appreciated.

PAN AMERICA BEGINS NEW SCHOOL YEAR
The Pan American Institute located in Tijuana, Mexico began the 2000 _ 2001 school year with 30 new students. There are 14 students attending PAI for their third year of studies, 21 students in their second year, and 30 students in their first year for a total of 65 students. Because recent graduates (June 2000) have computer training, they are able to work part-time to pay for further studies. One of the successful stories is Oralia Reynoso. She is 15 years old and works four hours a day for an investigation services company. Oralia is able to earn more in four hours than other employees earn in an eight-hour day because of the computer training she received at PAI. Oralia also attends a preparatory school everyday and is able to help with family expenses.
