FAIR SHARE

by Grant Stannard, Financial Services Committee

The term "Insufficient Funds" strikes fear in our hearts. Many times the effects of that simple term cause governments to crumble, businesses to declare bankruptcy and personal lives to fall apart. Additionally, insufficient funds can retard the work of the Lord more than any restrictive law, any oppressive government, or the misguided acts of a single person. Is it wrong that money has such an important role in our lives? Not at all. You may be surprised to learn that God's Word refers more to money and property relations than to any other subject.

The National Association of Congregational Christian Churches annually runs the risk of not receiving sufficient support from member congregations for general operating expenses. Each congregation's Fair Share contribution is determined by dividing the amount budgeted for general operating expenses by the total active membership of all Association churches, equaling around $10 per person. Each year the Budget Committee determines the amount needed to run the Association. This budget was recommended and subsequently approved by Church delegates at the Association's annual meeting in Spokane.

Many churches are now preparing 2002-2003 budgets. Each congregation's commitment to including their Fair Share contribution in their individual church budget is integral to the Association's ability to carry out the Lord's work. Honor the work of your Church delegates by supporting this contribution. Set an example to your congregation that Association stewardship is a priority. Make sure your Church budget contains its Fair Share.

THE SERENITY PRAYER
Eckhard Goldberg of Muchengladbach, Germany wrote to the NA asking if we knew of a Congregational Church in Heath, Massachusetts, where the original serenity prayer, written by Reinhold Niebuhr was used by him in worship in the early 1940's. With his letter was a copy of a letter from Niebuhr's wife, Ursula explaining the history, publication of, and continued use (with variations) of the prayer. The original went: "God give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change things which should be changed, and the wisdom to

distinguish the one from the other." Dr. Richard responded to Goldberg's letter with thanks, and we are searching the archives for information on the Heath Church.

GOOD IDEAS!

Mt. Dora FL Church (Rev. J. Babcock) in their monthly Tidings newsletter have short historical articles on Congregationalism.

Kenosha, WI Church (Dr. P. Spottswood) in their monthly The Spire inserted

a whole page with their leadership names on it with telephone numbers, addresses, etc., following their annual meeting.

Galesburg, IL Church (Rev. J. Carson) in their monthly Central Crier list all of the people who gave financial gifts to the Church in the last month.

Duluth Cong'l Church created a beautiful memorial garden. In addition to flowers and shrubs, it has a pathway of stones which can be engraved with the names of departed loved ones.
