SUCCESSFUL SUMMER PROGRAMS

by Giovan Venable King
Minister, Hyde Park Congregational Church, Los Angeles, CA

Hyde Park Congregational Church was very excited to sponsor a Royal Family Kids Camp this summer at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles’s Cedar Lake Camp. Royal Family Kids Camp is an annual week-long camp for inner-city foster children and other at-risk children and this year included thirty-two children and over thirty-two volunteers, as each child was paired with an adult counselor. The counselors are all volunteers who went through extensive training on several Saturdays this summer in our Fellowship Hall. There was also a camp “Grandma” and “Grandpa” who shared hugs, laughter, and stories with the children. They are the only “grandparents” that many of these children ever have. Each year has a theme. This year’s theme was from 2 Peter 2.9-10: “You are a royal priesthood.” I have to mention last year’s theme, as it was the same theme as the very successful International Congregational Fellowship gathering we just had this summer in Greece: “Running the Race,” based on 1 Cor. 9.24-27.

As Royal Family Kids Camp children were leaving the Camp, to return to Los Angeles, members of First Congregational Church of Los Angeles and many friends of the Camp were gathering for a celebration of Cedar Lake’s 50th Anniversary. There was a regatta on the Lake, time for worship, singing, a special program by an expert on birds of the region, a film festival, an appearance by Elvis (who starred in one of the many movies filmed at Cedar Lake over the years), and plenty of good food and fellowship. A sixty-page memory book is available from the Church and contains pictures and remembrances of people who have enjoyed the camp since 1955.

That was the last hurrah of the summer and several who joined in the Cedar Lake festivities returned to Los Angeles to prepare for the opening week of classes at First Church’s Pilgrim School. Pilgrim is a pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade college preparatory day school that is reported to be the most diverse private school west of the Mississippi.

Somehow, I have managed to include news of two Congregational churches, our Congregational day school in Los Angeles, the Congregational campgrounds in Southern California, Royal Family Kids Camp, and even the International Congregational Fellowship. It was a full and successful summer for each of these organizations!
Giovan Venable King is the minister at Hyde Park Congregational Church and began her career at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. She is privileged still to lead some retreats at Cedar Lake Camp and to work with the children of Pilgrim School from time to time.
