APPLY RELIGIOUS RESEARCH TO YOUR CHURCHES

The Faith Communities Today (FACT) project and the Hartford Institute for Religion Research at Hartford Seminary have created a new electronic newsletter called Leadership & Transformation. This quarterly newsletter will provide informative summaries of FACT and other religion research in a way that we believe will make it more applicable to pastors and congregational lay leaders.

We will focus the results of academic research on topics of concern to religious leaders working at the local level, and do so in ways that answer questions clergy and lay leaders ask about how to make a difference in their settings. Therefore, the newsletter’s first goal is to provide you with perspectives, tools and resources to help enhance your ministry. The second goal is to promote dialogue between congregational leaders (ordained and lay) about increasing the vitality and ministry effectiveness of faith communities.

A key feature of L&T is reader participation. On page 8 of the Newsletter you will find information about contributing. Please feel welcome to contact us for additional information, at L&T@hartsem.edu.

You can view the full newsletter in html at http://FACT.hartsem.edu/newsletter/L&T1-1.htm or the pdf version at http://FACT.hartsem.edu/newsletter/L&T1-1.pdf

If you wish to receive this newsletter, delivered quarterly to your inbox, send an email to L&T@hartsem.edu. If you prefer not to receive it, do nothing and no further notices of the newsletter will be sent to this email address. At present the newsletter is offered at no cost. Within a few issues we will request $24.00/ yr. if you wish to continue receiving a subscription ($18.00 if your church is a member of a FACT-sponsoring denomination). Paid subscriptions will also include access to a members-only website that will offer additional information and insights.

NAPF AND HOPE MEETINGS A BIG SUCCESS

The NAPF and HOPE Meetings were held at Baker University in Kansas this past June/July. The NAPF meeting’s topic was “Holy Heroes” with speaker Rev. Steve Erkel. The HOPE meeting was called “Roadway to Hope” and their speaker was Rev. Doug Gray. Both meetings included spiritual studies, a mission program, good music and fellowship. The youth joined the adults for an intergenerational event as part of the NA Meeting in Kansas City, MO. It was a great opportunity for the youth and the adults to share a meal, worship and fellowship. Based on the accomplishments and faith of our youth the future of the NA is in good hands, especially since some of our youth are eagerly looking forward to participating in the Adult Meetings. Following the NAPF and HOPE meetings, forty youth participated in a Pilgrim Mission Voyage (PMV) in Kansas City under the supervision of the Youth Commission and other youth leaders. They worked at Habitat for Humanity sites and at a center for youth not able to remain in their own homes. The Youth Commission will be encouraging all our youth leaders in the local churches to participate in the Youth Leadership Retreat (YLR) next spring . It is a great opportunity for youth leaders to come together, learn and share new ideas and programs.

Rev. Bobbie Chapman, Youth Commission
