Due to the generosity of several donors, the Joe Polhemus
Endowment Fund for The Congregationalist is off to a wonderful
start. This fund, when all pledges are in, will move from “Acorn
Fund” status into a permanent named fund. If you would like to
make a donation to this fund, please make out a check to the
Congregational Foundation and indicate that the donation is for
the “Polhemus Fund.”
There are two other funds that are in the “Acorn” stage. The
Providence Fund provides assistance to member churches that
cannot afford to send a delegate to the Annual Meeting and that
have not been represented at the meeting for three years. This
fund has five years in which to become a permanent named fund.
If you would like to donate to this fund, please make out a
check for the Congregational Foundation and indicate that the
donation is for the “Providence Fund.”
The Rev. Dr. John H. Alexander Fund honors one of the founders
of the National Association. Dr. Alexander was a true fighter
for our Way and a very kind and gentle man. This fund will be
used to help support the Executive Secretary’s position, which
John held from 1970-1975. If you would like to remember Dr.
Alexander, please make out a check to the Congregational
Foundation and indicate that your donation is to be used for the
“John H. Alexander Fund.”
Any donation of any size is welcome to help grow our “Acorn
Funds.” If you would like information on establishing an “Acorn
Fund” in memory or honor of someone or to help support a program
of the National Association, please contact Rev. Alice Murphy at
the National Association office.

STEWARDSHIP
Is your church in the throes of deciding what methods you can
use to improve member giving? Are you not getting the proper
stewardship messages to your people? Most all of us have that
problem at one time or another, due to changing demographics,
reduced membership or lack of understanding of true Biblical
stewardship by church members.
Your N.A. Financial Services Committee has researched this
problem finding programs that work (both inside our N.A. and
outside) and they can help you find the methods that work and
which have helped churches to much improved stewardship results.
If you wish to discuss this service subject, just call one of
our Financial Service Advisors in your area or call one of our
committee members. And—don’t forget the possibility of
generating Planned Gifts to your church as a form of
stewardship. You may get answers and improved results to solve
your problem!

| In Memory |
The death of the Rev. Dr. Harry Butman reminds us to remember
who he was—and what, ultimately, brings him praise as one who
stood tall among us. In Serve With Gladness he wrote:
The young man [sic.] who wants to be a pastoral
counselor, or a teacher of theology, or a denominational
official, will have many rewards in the course of his work,
but I am truly at a loss to see how these rewards could
exceed, or even match, the complex and durable joy of a
pastorate. As earnestly as ever revivalist pleaded for
decisions, I urge Christian young men [sic.], and especially
those in seminaries, to consider the challenge and blessing
of the noble and joyous task of serving a good people
gathered as a Church with Christ as head.
