Betsey received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology from the University of New Hampshire, her Master of Divinity degree from Earlham School of Religion and her Doctor of ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. Ordained in the First Congregational Church of Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1987, Betsey went on to serve to Association Churches in CT and ME. She is a graduate of CFTS where she was recognized for her commitment to Congregationalism with the John Claxton Award for Congregational excellence.
Betsey has served in many volunteer capacities for the NACCC including CFTS, Executive Committee, Search Committees, Mission Statement Team, Strategic Planning Team, Future Planning Team, World Christian Relations Committee and others. In 2001, she was moderator for the Annual Meeting held in East Lansing, Michigan.
Throughout her ministry, Betsey has been active in Hospice, as both a chaplain and an advisor, and has served as a chaplain and a Trustee of Penobscot Bay Health Care.
Betsey is married to Paul Smith, a custom fine-furniture designer and builder. Together, they raised one daughter, Sari Mauro, a student at Elizabethtown College.
Outside of work, Betsey plays flute and piccolo in many ensembles. She enjoys kayaking, biking, walking, reading and traveling and helps her husband Paul with his business. |

Rev. Mauro is the Dean of the newly established Center for Congregational Leadership at Olivet College. Based in Olivet, Michigan, Betsey assists the Association, through its Congregational Foundation for Theological Studies (CFTS) in training seminarians for pastorates in Congregational churches and in administering the Lay Ministry Training Program. Additionally, she will be developing training and educational opportunities for churches and lay leaders to help strengthen their Congregational Christian witness in America’s rapidly changing culture. |
