Fishing is a major industry. There are some jobs for people graduating from high school or college but more are needed and are being created with the arrival of MBNA and other industries. A large retirement population contributes to some growth in the area. As the county seat, there is a large population needing social assistance. The county courthouse creates a direct relationship to the state prison located in the area. The church serves a geographical area approximately 12 miles in radius. There is broad diversity in the educational levels of the congregants. A bedroom community for Hartford (30 miles away) the town has no industrial or business base. There is some farming. Many homes are owned by people living and working in New York City and coming to "the country" for the weekend.
