WORK HISTORY

Rockland Congregational Church, Rockland, Maine

September 1995 to Present

Active Membership: 256

Setting: Large town (7500 residents), coastal Maine. Fishing is a major industry. There are some jobs for people graduating from high school or college but more are needed and are being created with the arrival of MBNA and other industries. A large retirement population contributes to some growth in the area. As the county seat, there is a large population needing social assistance. The county courthouse creates a direct relationship to the state prison located in the area. The church serves a geographical area approximately 12 miles in radius. There is broad diversity in the educational levels of the congregants.

Colebrook Congregational Church, Colebrook, Connecticut September 1988 to August 1995 Active Membership: 85

Setting: Rural, small town (1500 residents). A bedroom community for Hartford (30 miles away) the town has no industrial or business base. There is some farming. Many homes are owned by people living and working in New York City and coming to "the country" for the weekend. There is economic disparity between the "weekenders" and the "permanent" residents which creates some tension. Both populations are present in the church. The church serves a geographical area approximately 5 miles in radius. The congregation is largely well educated and professional.
