TRAVANCORE CHURCH COUNCIL
Tamil Nadu, South India
The London Missionary Society sent the first Congregational Missionaries to India in 1820. As a result, a group of Congregational Churches were gathered in the southern part of India that is known as the Travancore Church Council. Forty-five churches, ranging in size from 20 to 1400 families, now spread the gospel in the state of Tamil Nadu. Some of these congregations worship in thatched sheds.
Under the leadership of Rev. Kenaz Solomon, these churches face strong opposition in a culture hostile to any “foreign faith.” It is essential that we support this important work. Rev. Solomon and his wife, Kamazh, along with son, Samuel, have ministered faithfully as a missionary family for many years. They serve the Lord with a sense of loyalty to Christ and the Congregational Way.
The Travancore Church Council sponsors these ministries:
Congregational Christian Hospital: A 30 bed hospital at Palliyadi serves 14 villages (30,000 people). Started in 1967, the hospital is not doing well for want of doctors who are willing to work rural areas for longer periods.
Rev. Kenaz’s son, Dr. Samuel Ben Solomon has completed M.D. (Internal Medicine)is wiling to take over and work there for many years. Missionary Society has supported his medical education.
Through donations from Congregational Churches and individuals, an ECG machine and monitor, an X-Ray machine, and smaller pieces of equipment have been purchased. Funds are needed to buy more expensive equipment The church is a mission hospital that caters to medical needs of the poor who can not otherwise go to more expensive private hospitals.
Sunday Schools with an enrollment of more that 5,000 children.
Schools: One Elementary School and a Christian Middle School.
