Piney Woods, Mississippi
Founded in 1909, and soon to celebrate its Centennial, the Piney Woods School (formerly Piney Woods Country Life School) is the flagship of four remaining historically African-American boarding schools in the United States. The school was founded by Dr. Laurence C. Jones, an Iowan, who came to the South with the desire to educate children in a desperately poor section of in rural Rankin County, Mississippi. Piney Woods is located 21 miles southeast of Jackson, Mississippi.
Today, Piney Woods’ student population is comprised of approximately 225 students, ninth through twelfth graders from throughout the United States the Virgin Islands, and two African nations. The school’s mission is to provide excellence in education within a Christian environment through the creation of an exceptional academic model. Piney Woods that all students can learn, develop a strong work ethic, and lead extraordinary lives through academic achievement and responsible citizenship. As an interdenominational Christian school, it affirms the values of faith, discipline, excellence and service.
Piney Woods is on the cutting edge of educating youths in this country. It is challenged with a great commission: to continue to fulfill the legacy begun almost 100 years ago by Dr. Jones and to continue to train young men and women leaders who are:
