Thoughts: A Simple Invitation to Follow Him
|
Rev. Dr. Barry W. Szymanski, Interim Executive Director
|
I clearly remember the specific evening when my Spiritual Director bluntly told me that our church would be putting me “under care.” I didn’t know what he meant!
At that time in my life, I was busy practicing law and married to my wife, Sue. My plate was full. However, I wanted to study more theology for the Bible classes I was leading so I responded to an advertisement from a seminary to take an audit course, which led to my enrolling as a student. They assigned me an academic advisor and told me I could choose my spiritual advisor. I chose my pastor. Pursuant to seminary guidelines, I met with him regularly. At that memorable meeting, he said he would like our congregation to place me “under care,” and asked if I would agree. I asked what it would entail, and he said it was a step leading toward ordination.
I did not feel God had been calling me to ministry, but I also have learned that the Holy Spirit often tricks us and leads us to where we would not ordinarily go. Yes, I felt conned by God. However, my heart and my soul were full of joy.
I wonder how many people have entered into lay ministry training (LMTP) or seminary (CFTS) because their pastor or others invited them into ministry. How many more individuals would sign up for religious studies if only someone – someone like you, the reader – would invite them to do so? Often, all it takes is an invitation!

Update Your Church Information Form
|
The NACCC is best able to serve our member churches when our staff and leaders are in regular contact with your church leadership. This helps us stay informed about your church’s needs and desires, ensuring that we can offer the right resources and support and keep you aware of the opportunities we have to offer.
Please take a few minutes to fill out a Church Information Form with the contact information for your church’s leaders so that we can effectively serve and connect with your church in the new year!
Completed forms can be emailed to NACCC Communications Manager Maggie Helmick.
